COLOMBO (AFP) — The leader of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was shot dead on Monday while trying to flee government troops, a senior defence official told AFP.

Prabhakaran was in a small convoy of a van and ambulance along with a few aides which tried to drive out of the battle zone, but was attacked and killed, the senior defence ministry official said on condition he not be named.

"He was killed with two others inside the vehicle. There will be a formal announcement later," the official said.

"When the troops opened fire, the van tried to get away, but it was also hit," said another high-level source from the military. "The vehicle caught fire."

Earlier on Monday, Prabhakaran's son, Charles Anthony, and several other senior leaders were shot dead by special forces commandos, defence officials said.

Meanwhile, 58 Division troops advancing along the A-35 main road, south of Rektavaikkal have recently uncovered a large haul of improvised phosphorous bombs, security sources said.

Protocol - III of the Geneva Convention on Certain Weapons 1980, prohibits and restricts the use of incendiary weapons: flame throwers, foul gasses, shells, rockets, grenades, mines, bombs and other containers of incendiary substances.

UN Security Council refuses to swallow LTTE propaganda pills

op diplomats from Britain and France were rebuffed Monday (May 11), when UN Security Council members refused their request to discuss on the on-going hostage rescue operations in Sri Lanka, despite extensive and relentless LTTE propaganda efforts to spin tables in favour, expecting a breather for the internationally proscribed terrorist outfit now facing total defeat.

The council members that opposed taking up the issue were not named publicly.

Foreign Ministers David Miliband of Britain and Bernard Kouchner of France were also joined by Austria's Michael Spindelegger, the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, to protest inaction by the 15-nation council at UN headquarters in New York.

When asked which council members opposed their request, Miliband said, 'We can only speak for ourselves. Others can speak for themselves.'

'We are clear, this is an issue that the UN Security Council should address, it involves major civilian loss of lives and distress,' Miliband said. 'It does have ramifications for the region. We as European members of the UN Security Council, we believe that the issues belong here.'

As a rule and unless a crisis is already on the council's agenda, a majority of nine council members have to approve a new issue be put on the agenda of discussion. Some council members have opposed discussion over matters they consider domestic matters.

China in the past opposed discussion of Myanmar's political crisis and Russia opposed discussion of Chechnya, where armed opposition was fighting Russian troops for independence.

'Thousands of Sri Lankans have already died in the past several months due to the conflict, and more still remain in grave danger,' Ban said, adding that he was appalled at the killing.

'The reckless disrespect shown by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the safety of civilians has led to thousands of people remaining trapped in the area,' Secretary General Ban said.

Canada won't support LTTE terrorists' says Minister Oda

Canadian International Cooperation Minister Beverly J. Oda Monday(May 4) said the Canadian Government will not provide any support for the pro LTTE elements operating on its soil. She arrived in Sri Lanka for a one day official visit at the invitation of Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.

Addressing the media after a meeting with Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Oda said the Canadian Government has identified these elements and they will be severely dealt with according to law of the country. "Canada proscribed the LTTE as a terrorist organisation in 2006 and that policy decision remains unchanged," she said.

The Canadian Minister expressed her satisfaction over the facilities provided to the civilians who sought the government's protection.

She welcomed the Government moves to reunify families stranded by terrorist atrocities and resettlement of civilians in their original places of residence. VShe promised to consider the request by the Foreign Minister for Canadian assistance to support infrastructure development and mine clearance activities in the North. She said Canadian assistance to Sri Lanka will continue uninterrupted. VForeign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said the Sri Lankan Government appreciates the counter terrorism measures taken by Canada proscribing in 2006 one of the most ruthless terrorist outfits in the world. .

The boy's legs had been chopped off by an axe, in front of his own family, as a 'punishment' for trying to escape. Mercifully, the boy had died soon. Note how a Red Cross worker is aiding. This is only a tiny fraction of the inhuman treatment that innocent Tamil people who are being held by the LTTE for their protection are being subjected to. The Tamil diaspora in western countries paint a very different picture, just to get international support to stop the Sri Lankan armed forces from completely eliminating these psychopathic terrorists. The government of Sri Lanka is trying to help these innocent people to lreagain a life free from these terrorists. It is too bad that those in the United Nations, the "Human Rights Watch" with many other international aid organizations, and many other politicians have fallen for their blatant lies. As the dream of a separate Tamil Homeland fades away in Sri Lanka, Tamil homeland experts are finding new evidence in Australia's Northern Territory, that they say was once an ancient Tamil Kingdom.The Northen Territory is home to Australia’s largest population of Aboriginal people, the NT offers a rich array of Aboriginal culture with its 40,000 year old traditions – including basket weaving, spear fishing and story telling.

Experts found the evidence, as a hiker discovered a well preserved Vada and Dosa parcel buried in a cave. Carbon dating in a German lab has found this package to be at least 27,000 years old. Tamil historians in Tamil Nadu say rock paintings of short dark men and women , on the cave walls suggest they were Tamils. They say the cave found in the World Heritage site, Kakadu National Park was orginally called Kakaduthurai during the Tamil Kingdom. They also say the iconic Uluru was a holy city called Uluruppalam.

Plans are now underway by the Tamil diaspora to establish a homeland in Northern Australia and as further evidence surface will be expanded to cover whole of Australia.The new flag will be the same except the soon to be extinct Liberation Tamil Tiger will be replaced with the now extinct Tazmanian Tiger.
